Watch the CHC 2022 recap

The global race is on to adopt hydrogen technologies—countries around the world are positioning themselves to become tomorrow’s hydrogen superpowers. Canada and Alberta are playing a critical role in the development of the global hydrogen economy with innovators in production processes and pioneers in fuel cell technology.

The time to double down on hydrogen in Alberta is now—starting in the Edmonton region.

The Edmonton region is bringing Canada’s entire hydrogen value chain together at the 2024 Canadian Hydrogen Convention (CHC) on April 22-25, 2024. CHC 2023 marked the first Hydrogen Case Competition, which welcomed students from across Alberta to compete to solve some of Canada’s biggest decarbonization challenges. In 2024, this competition is going global with the Global Hydrogen Case Competition.

The University of Alberta’s Interdisciplinary Consulting Association (ICA) is partnering with industry to bring this student case competition to the international stage, welcoming teams from across the globe to compete at North America’s largest and most influential hydrogen convention. With over 8,000 attendees representing at least 70 countries, post-secondary students will have the opportunity to pitch their strategic solutions to a global audience and help pave the way to a net-zero future.

Read about the 2023 competition

“The Hydrogen Case competition was an invaluable experience. Attending the Canadian Hydrogen Convention and learning about the hydrogen industry was a highlight of my experience as I was able to learn so much about the industry. While winning was an honour, the true value came from the experiences and people I met who are working towards the Hydrogen industry in Edmonton. I am grateful for this opportunity and the experience gained will remain with me.”

Who Can Participate?

We are calling all post-secondary students from any academic field of study to participate in this international student case competition. Whether you’re enrolled in business, environmental sciences, engineering, or any other program—you all bring something to the table. The only requirement is that each member is an undergraduate student in good standing enrolled in an accredited post-secondary institution. Each team should have at least two and no more than four members.

What is the competition format?

Registration Process:

Participants will have to register their teams by January 31, 2024, to be considered for the preliminary round. Each team will be given a case to analyze and prepare their solutions to present in the preliminary round.

Preliminary Round (early February):

  • The preliminary round is based on the submission of a pre-recorded video presentation of no more than four (4) minutes. Participants must also submit the accompanying presentation file in PDF format. It is important to note that only the content covered in the video presentation will be evaluated.

    • The presentation must include a team name.

    • Do not disclose your post-secondary institution. Teams that name their institution in the video will be immediately disqualified.

    • The recording must follow this format, using picture-in-picture for the presentation.

Final Round:

  • The top global teams will then be invited to compete during the Canadian Hydrogen Convention on April 22-25, 2024, in Edmonton, Canada. A representative from the Interdisciplinary Consulting Association will contact the finalists by email at ica@ualberta.ca.

  • Teams will present live in front of a panel of judges during the convention.

  • The winning team will be announced during the Awards Gala at the Canadian Hydrogen Convention.
